  1. So what's the deal with port wine? Give me the ins and outs. Where it's from. What grapes are used. How it's made. Different types. Best labels. Your favorite.

  2. Port comes from the Douro Valley in Portugal. Grapes used for making Port are numerous. There are 48 varieties permitted in the production of Port, but the best currently considered by growers and winemakers is Touriga nacional. It has tiny berries and produces pitch black wine with intense aromatic properties. Port fermentation is basically no different than any other wine except that it is halted by the addition of a distilled grape spirit which is colorless, odorless and flavorless. So there is still sugars in the wine that never fermented which leaves a sweet taste. There are ruby, tawny and vintage ports all of which have their own taste profiles. I'll talk about them next time. Bye for now.
